Perhaps you know this state: you are waiting — not only for a text, a call or an apology, but for one particular reaction that will finally let you feel okay again.
“When they reply, I can relax. When they understand me, I will be all right. When they see what they did, my body can stand down.” It is deeply human. It can also become one of the quietest forms of unfreedom in a relationship.
When happiness has conditions
Relationships, recognition, sex, success and beautiful experiences can all bring joy. The difficulty begins when a partner is no longer someone with whom you share happiness, but the condition for being able to access it at all. Love can then turn into a private contract: you must behave correctly for me to feel okay; you must see me for me to feel valuable; you must change for me to find peace.
The exhausting state of waiting
The wish for contact, an apology or commitment can be completely justified — especially after a boundary has been crossed. Still, it is worth asking: what happens to you while the response does not come? Is your day entirely in the hands of someone who cannot, or does not yet know how to, give what you need?
Emotional independence creates room for closeness
Emotional independence combines longing, vulnerability and the capacity to be moved with a stable connection to yourself. You can want something deeply from your partner while continuing to stand on your own inner ground.
Self-regulation gives love and freely chosen closeness more room to breathe. A steady connection to yourself reduces pressure and makes genuine contact easier.
A meditation for this moment
The Happiness Meditation is a guided practice I created for moments of waiting, tension and longing for something outside of you to change. It returns your attention to yourself and creates a little more inner ground before a conversation, boundary or decision.
Please note: the guided podcast episode is currently available in German only. You can still use this article’s reflection wherever you are listening from.
Happiness is not a product of circumstances
Meditation can make room for choice. From a steadier connection to ourselves, we can ask more clearly, listen more openly and choose the next step with greater care.
